Chapter 55
“Oh. Momany. You finally picked up my call. Jacob’s voice came through the phone. It sounded cautious yet with a clear note of joy.
He believed Jessica had forgiven him, so she was willing to answer his call.
Jessica replied in a cool tone, Anything you’d like to say?”
She could sense the happiness in her son’s voice, but what remained between them now was merely her responsibility as a mother.
“Mom… Jacob sensed the indifference in her tone. Holding back his tears, he tried to sound cheerful. “Mom, I got a perfect score on my test. I studied hard and behaved well these days.”
Jessica’s voice remained calm and distant. “That’s good”
There was no joy or pride in her tone, as if Jacob’s academic performance no longer mattered to her.
Jacob felt a wave of disappointment and grievance. “Mom, I told you the news first. I haven’t even told Dad yet. Don’t you praise me?”
In the past, even if he didn’t get a perfect score, his mother would always encourage him with a kiss on the forehead and patiently go over the mistakes with him.
“Keep it up.” Jessica said as she pressed the clutch pedal.
The traffic light turned green, and she started the car again. In the distance, she could already see the towering building of Grant Group’s headquarters.
Jacob pouted upon hearing Jessica’s response. He could feel that Jessica was just brushing him off, not even making an effort to praise him sincerely.
But deep down, he also knew that she probably had not forgiven him for hitting her on the head and saying those hurtful words during their last argument.
Jacob thought his mother was so petty, but he dared not say anything else. He simply kept quiet and swallowed the frustration.
Jessica waited for 30 seconds without speaking. Seeing it was almost 8 AM, she said flatly, “Is there anything else?”
If Jacob had nothing more to say, she would end the call.
To Jessica now, Jacob was not as important as the work in her hands.
Jacob hesitated for a while and then said, “Mom, I have a parent–teacher meeting soon. Can you come?”
Jessica had always attended them in the past. His classmates all envied him for having such a beautiful mother.
Recently, Jessica stopped picking him up or dropping him off. On top of that, Wyatt claimed that his mother had cheated and no longer wanted him. Even the girls in his class started to ask why his mother suddenly disappeared.
I’ll tell your father. Jacob, your father can attend the parent–teacher meetings, you know?” Jessica said.
She ended the call just as she arrived at the company’s underground parking lot.
“Good morning, Ms. Grant. On her way to the office, the employees she passed greeted her with much more enthusiasm than the distant courtesy from the day before.
Jessica offered them a slight nod and walked straight into her office. Moments later, Herbert knocked on the door and entered, his arms full of today’s schedule.
He stood in front of her desk and reported, “Ms. Grant, the video conference at 8:30 AM will be with the project liaison in Serenosy. They will report the progress.
“At 9 AM, the representative from Bluewave Group will arrive to sign the contract. You’ll need to be present and sign. At 10:30…”
Herbert listed the rest of the day’s agenda aloud, making sure Jessica’s timing was well arranged.
