As the meeting wrapped up, a knock sounded at the conference room door.

Gian stepped in and looked at Danielle. “Mr. Chapman is here.”

Danielle blinked in surprise. Why was he showing up now, of all times? He hadn’t mentioned any business to discuss lately.

She exchanged a few words with Mr. Hawthorne and stepped out into the hallway.

“What’s going on?” she asked Gian.

“The ISSDS is about to kick off,” Gian explained. “He’s in town on business. He wanted to meet you during the regionals, remember?”

Danielle paused, processing that. “He knows I’m Sophia?”

Back at the regionals, Harold’s people had actually tried to meet Sophia backstage, but she hadn’t revealed she was also competing.

Gian shook his head. “Harold’s a sharp guy. Through our partnership, he’s figured out what you’re capable of. During the regionals, one of his guys saw you backstage. It wasn’t hard to connect the dots. The finals are being held down here in the south, after all.”

“He picked a place to meet. Our project’s first phase just wrapped up, so maybe he wants an update. He’s already waiting—want to go together?”

Harold was a remarkable partner—never once meddling in the projects he invested in.

Danielle saw no reason to refuse.
