She struck up a conversation with Danielle.

Danielle, without missing a beat, edged away from her, as if Millie were carrying the plague.

The disdain on Danielle’s face was plain as day—she didn’t even bother to hide it.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Millie shot her a look.

“Even if you two are divorced,” Millie frowned, “there’s no need to act like sworn enemies, is there? Why the theatrics? Don’t you have the slightest sense of basic manners?”

At this point, Danielle found it revolting to even share the same air with her.

She could tolerate Millie at work, but outside of it? There was no way she’d let herself be irritated any further.

Danielle glanced at her sidelong. “Just so you know, Miss Fletcher, the basics of social etiquette depend on whether the other person actually wants to talk to you. If they don’t, and you keep pushing, that’s the real lack of manners.”

“And besides—” Danielle’s gaze turned frosty as she glanced at Alexander nearby, “if I really kept in touch with my ex after the divorce, would you honestly be happy about that?”

Millie’s eyes narrowed.

Danielle gave a wry smile, nodded slightly, and walked to another elevator to wait.

She couldn’t even stand sharing an elevator with them.

Millie stared after her, incredulous.

She looked up at Alexander, whose expression remained completely unchanged.

Millie spoke up, “Alex, we haven’t done anything wrong, but the way she talks, it’s as if there’s something between us.”

“You’re not even the least bit angry?”

Alexander’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he finally looked away from Danielle. His tone was mild, “If there’s truly nothing, what’s there to be angry about?”

His voice was calm, but the slow, lingering drawl in his words left room for all kinds of speculation.
