As soon as Danielle arrived back in Northridge City, she headed straight to pick up her daughter.

Niki came dashing out of the Blackwood Research Institute, flinging herself into Danielle’s arms. “Mom!”

Danielle scooped Niki up with practiced ease. “You’ve gotten heavier, sweetheart. It’s only been a few days—been eating that well here?”

Kids grow fast at this age. Every month, it seemed, she looked a little different.

Niki beamed. “Grandpa Hawthorne takes me out for all sorts of yummy food every day. I love being with him.”

Mr. Hawthorne stepped out of the room, hands clasped behind his back, his gaze deep and thoughtful as it landed on Danielle. “First place in the competition this time. Congratulations.”

Niki hugged Danielle’s neck, planting a kiss on her cheek. “Mommy’s amazing! You really won first place.”

“I knew you were the best, Mom!”

She’d become so much more cheerful lately, and her words were sweet as honey.

Danielle set Niki down, giving her a mock-stern look. “And who taught you to be so charming?”

Niki’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “It’s not charming—it’s just the truth!”

Danielle couldn’t help but laugh. Watching her daughter grow up healthy and happy filled her heart with warmth.

Everything, little by little, seemed to be moving in the right direction.

Afterwards, Mr. Hawthorne discussed some issues about the Blackwood Research Institute project with Danielle.

Once she got home, Danielle dove straight back into her work.
