Danielle didn’t take the old lady’s words to heart. She brushed them aside without a second thought.

By this time next year, once the divorce agreement expired, she’d have nothing to do with the Davidson family anymore.

And there’d be absolutely no reason for her to attend any grand birthday party at their place.

She answered her grandmother softly, exchanged a few pleasantries, and then hung up the phone.

Kirsten noticed the subtle change in Danielle’s expression after the call and couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong? Who was that?”

Danielle replied, “It was my grandmother, calling to wish me a happy birthday.”

“Your grandma called and you look so down?” Kirsten’s eyes searched her face. “I thought she’s always been good to you. Did she give you a hard time?”

“Of course not,” Danielle sighed and managed a small laugh. “It’s just that, after my mom passed away, everything feels different. Nothing’s the same anymore.”

Her grandmother was the only one in the Davidson family who’d ever shown her any real kindness—and the only constant.

Kirsten studied her for a moment, thinking how rough Danielle’s years with the Davidsons must have been. No wonder leaving that place made the world feel so different.

“It’s your birthday, Dani. You should be happy, not thinking about all that stuff.” With that, she tugged Danielle back to the pool table.

They were halfway through their game when the door swung open and another group stepped inside.

“Alex, I haven’t played this in ages—totally out of practice,” Millie said as she walked in with Alexander and the rest.

Spotting Danielle’s group, Millie paused in surprise and glanced at Alexander.

He, as always, was unreadable—his face cool and detached.

Liam looked over, then just as quickly looked away without a word.

Gian and Kirsten noticed them too.

Since they all knew each other, and even worked together from time to time, they offered a brief, polite hello.
