Alexander looked at her. “You haven’t eaten all day. Once you’ve had dinner, I’ll take you home.”

“I drove myself here,” Danielle replied, her tone making it clear she neither wanted nor needed his company.

“I’ll have someone drive your car back to your apartment,” Alexander said coolly. “You’re in no shape to drive right now.”

“If you’re so eager to risk your life, don’t drag Niki into it,” Danielle shot back, frowning.

She lowered her gaze to the meal set before her—each dish was one of her favorites.

“Did Grandma have this sent over?” she asked quietly.

Alexander stood by the window, his tone indifferent. “Who else but Grandma would know what you like?”

Danielle certainly didn’t flatter herself into thinking he’d gone to the trouble.

Even if he had, it would just be for show in front of his grandmother.

“You don’t have to stay here,” Danielle said, picking up her fork.

Alexander didn’t respond. He simply turned and walked out, not even glancing her way.

He clearly didn’t enjoy spending time with her, and Danielle could feel it acutely.

They’d gone from strangers to something worse—two people who now found each other exhausting.

As Danielle was pushing her food around, Niki burst in, hugging her tablet to her chest.

“Whose tablet is that?” Danielle asked.

“Dad’s—” Niki set the device aside and hurried over. “Mom, are you feeling better?”
