The officer frowned at her. “Are you Leanne Fletcher?”

Leanne froze for a moment before nodding. “Yes, is something wrong?”

“The incident at the hospital—Miss Crawford has filed a report. We’ve reviewed the security footage and have all the facts. You were the aggressor, while Miss Crawford acted in self-defense. Miss Crawford has refused any private settlement and insists we proceed according to the law. Under the Public Order Act, you’re to be detained for five days.”

Leanne’s legs nearly gave out beneath her. “What? There must be some mistake!”

Millie stiffened, her face darkening.

It was as if life was determined to bring disaster after disaster. First trouble at the company, and now was her mother about to be detained too?

She shot a cold glare at Danielle, who stood nearby.

Millie turned to the officer. “Officer, there has to be some misunderstanding. My mother would never attack someone without reason.”

“If you have any doubts about the case, we’re prepared to make the evidence public.”

“No, no—” Leanne’s panic was palpable. She shook her head vigorously. “Please, don’t.”

If the details of her conversation with Danielle were revealed, they’d both be finished.

Alexander stood by, face unreadable as he watched the scene unfold.

Liam frowned. “Alex, what’s going on here? Don’t tell me…”

Was it possible Millie’s mother really was at fault?

“Take her away,” the officer ordered.

Leanne was led off, her face ashen.

Millie looked even paler, nearly ghostly.

Around them, people muttered and whispered, gossip crackling in the air.

Millie’s mind spun back to the fight between her mother and Danielle at the hospital. If it was all caught on camera, the evidence would be devastating if made public.

She clenched her jaw, then turned to face the man standing behind her.

“Alex—”

She took a steadying breath and walked over to him.

“Danielle completely provoked my mother first. She called her a homewrecker, and me—she said I was your mistress.”

“She has no regard for your reputation whatsoever. If that footage gets out, it’ll humiliate the Davidson family, won’t it?”

Her voice was barely above a whisper, meant only for Alexander’s ears.

Better to tell him herself than have Danielle bring it up. After all, Danielle had the evidence—she could release it whenever she liked. If Millie came clean now, maybe she could protect herself and her mother.

Alexander glanced at her, his expression cool. “What’s done is done. If you have questions, you can apply to the authorities.”
