“Grandma’s got the wrong idea about me and Alex. You have to help me explain things to her.”

Danielle lowered her gaze, barely glancing at Millie’s hand gripping her own. She coolly pulled away. “We can talk business, but don’t try to play on my emotions. There’s nothing between us worth appealing to.”

So there was no emotional card to play—because there was no emotion to begin with.

Every time Millie touched her, Danielle felt nothing but revulsion.

Her attitude toward Millie was colder than ever.

The old lady, sharp-eyed as always, could see right through the tension between them.

“You don’t believe me?” Millie’s face crumpled with hurt.

“Danielle, even if you don’t trust me, you should at least believe Alex. There’s nothing between us—absolutely nothing.”

“All those rumors people are spreading? They’re just that—rumors. We can’t let this nonsense tear our family apart.”

Sitting calmly, the old lady traced the rim of her teacup, her gaze drifting from one woman to the other.

Danielle listened to Millie’s explanations, her expression as unreadable as ever. She didn’t react at all.

At last, Danielle looked up at Millie and said quietly, “If you’ve done nothing wrong, you don’t need to explain yourself.”

Her words were carefully chosen.

You could take them to mean: if nothing happened, there’s nothing to explain.

Or: if things really were that innocent, there’d be no need to come here and plead your case.

Millie was taken aback by her icy indifference. “You don’t believe me? You don’t believe Alex, either?”

“That’s enough.” The old lady’s eyes narrowed as she set her cup down, her tone flat and final. “Stories like this don’t materialize out of thin air, Millie. You’ve been spending far too much time with another woman’s husband. If you hadn’t, there wouldn’t be all these whispers, would there?”

Millie’s posture wilted. She looked up at her grandmother, disbelief in her eyes. “You think I’m in the wrong too, Grandma?”
