Alexander’s gaze was intense as he looked at Danielle’s delicate face. “When are you going to learn not to put on a brave front?”

He swallowed hard. “If you have resources, you should know how to use them.”

By now, Millie had finished her phone call on the other side of the room.

Without another glance at Danielle, Alexander strode off with Millie in tow.

Danielle frowned.

She couldn’t make sense of Alexander’s words. They seemed completely out of left field.

As Liam passed by, he shot Danielle a cold, sidelong glance. “Be careful you don’t end up shooting yourself in the foot.”

Right now she was acting reckless, all because after their divorce, Alex had still treated her with a sort of residual kindness.

She really thought her own charm was the reason she could parade around in front of Millie, stepping on her toes whenever she pleased. But now, she’d practically trampled all over her.

Did she really think, at this point, that Alex was going to let her off the hook?

Dr. Gable had messaged her on WhatsApp, saying her uncle’s spirits had improved lately, but he still needed family visits for support.

After seeing her uncle and leaving the hospital, Danielle’s phone rang—it was her grandmother.

Ever since her grandmother had sensed the rift between Danielle and Alexander, she’d had people keeping an eye on any signs of trouble.

“Dani, the anniversary celebration was a huge success—you looked beautiful, too. But I know some people put you through a lot.” Her grandmother’s voice was gentle but firm. “I’ve even checked the online gossip myself, just to be sure.”

“Tell me honestly—did Millie really come between you and Alex? If she did, I promise I’ll take care of it for you.”

Danielle held the phone with one hand and rubbed her brow with the other.

Deep down, she knew her grandmother only wanted to help patch up her marriage with Alexander, to resolve whatever stood between them.
