“You know there was no need to block me, right?” Alexander’s tone was even, a hint of amusement beneath the surface. One way or another, he always managed to reach her.

Danielle gave a half-smile. “I just didn’t want you blowing up my phone or pestering me. If it’s really urgent, you’d find a way to get in touch anyway.”

“And after this is over—after the year’s up and the agreement ends—there won’t be any reason for us to cross paths again.”

By then, they’d go their separate ways and have nothing more to do with each other.

Alexander didn’t press the issue. “Don’t forget to bring Niki to the graduation party.”

Danielle didn’t answer. She simply turned and walked away.

The graduation party was all her grandmother’s doing, and if Niki agreed to go, Danielle would take her daughter along.

The desert had been brutal. When Gian emerged from arrivals, Danielle and Kirsten almost didn’t recognize him—his skin had tanned several shades darker.

“Honestly, you look like you’ve been exiled to Africa,” Kirsten teased, eyeing him up and down. “You’ve changed so much, I barely recognized you in the crowd. For a second, I thought you were someone visiting from another continent.”

Gian grinned, unfazed. “You haven’t changed a bit, Kirsten. And I actually like the tan—makes me look more rugged, don’t you think?”
