Danielle was packing her suitcase for a business trip.

They’d moved in early, ahead of schedule. The original plan was to wait until Danielle got back from her trip, but since their old lease was up, they decided to settle in sooner rather than later.

“Grandma’s coming to pick you up tomorrow,” Danielle told her daughter. “You’ll be staying with her for a little while.”

“Is your trip going to be long, Mom?” Niki blinked up at her. “Can I come with you this time?”

Danielle smiled softly, brushing a hand over her daughter’s hair. “I’ll be back in a day or two. Just stay with Grandma and be good, okay? Listen to her while I’m gone.”

She was headed out of state, partly for work, and partly to look into organ transplant resources for her brother—she’d heard there might be help available there.

Niki, always obedient, nodded quietly. She didn’t press the issue.
