Alexander’s dark eyes lingered on her in silence.

He turned his head to glance at Niki, who lay unconscious on the hospital bed, then looked away almost immediately.

His voice was low and detached. “Come with me.”

Just three words, delivered with no discernible emotion.

Danielle’s brow tightened.

She watched his broad-shouldered figure stride out of the room, then followed after him.

That brief command was clearly his way of asking for a private conversation.

Alexander led her down the hallway to a lounge.

Danielle took in the space, her gaze sweeping over everything. The room was tastefully minimalist, with quiet hints of luxury—somewhere he clearly frequented.

He sat on the couch and gestured for her to sit as well.

A table in front of them was set with an array of dishes.

Danielle frowned, unsure what he was getting at.

Alexander regarded her with a calm, unreadable look. “Eat first.”

She lowered her eyes, noticing that nearly every dish was something she liked.

Between worrying over Niki and helping the doctors, Danielle hadn’t eaten a thing all day. Now, staring at a table full of her favorite food, she found she had no appetite at all.

“You had someone prepare this?” Danielle met Alexander’s gaze, searching his face for any hint of emotion.

He answered with another question. “You’re not hungry?”

He never gave straight answers.

Danielle’s expression didn’t change, but her brow creased a little tighter.

“No appetite.” She stared at him, her tone flat. She had no interest in sharing a meal with him—her heart felt unbearably heavy.

Maybe she just didn’t understand enough. There was so much she’d never been told.

Niki’s accident had left her rattled to her core. Even though the police were investigating now, Danielle couldn’t shake her anxiety. She couldn’t let go.

“What did you mean when you said the private clinic would be safer?”

Alexander crossed his legs, his eyes cold. “Exactly what I said.”

Danielle’s frown deepened. “I’m tired of riddles. Explain.”

He stared at her, then spoke slowly, “Have you ever really listened to me?”

Danielle’s reply was crisp. “Which time?”

He was always so vague, so cryptic. How was she supposed to interpret that?

Even after five or six years of marriage, their conversations were few and far between.

Alexander sat quietly, watching her.

His gaze made her uneasy, as if somehow, in this marriage, she was the one who had done something wrong.
