Alexander listened, his face betraying no emotion except for a faint, indifferent smirk. He glanced down, stubbed out his cigarette, and spoke carelessly. “Whatever.”

Nathan watched him, his brows knitting slightly at Alexander’s nonchalant attitude.

Without another word, Alexander turned and left.

It was as if Danielle meant nothing to him—he seemed utterly indifferent, whether it was about his daughter or Danielle herself.

Nathan suspected that Niki’s current stay at Serenity Sanatorium was just a convenient way for Alexander to keep up appearances, to quell any rumors before they started.

The more Nathan thought about it, the colder his expression became.

Niki’s health was improving, but every night she was plagued by nightmares—jerking awake, terrified and trembling.

Danielle rarely left her bedside, keeping constant watch.

Nathan took in the scene, his voice gentle. “You should have a psychiatrist come by. Niki can’t go on like this forever. And I heard you’re entering the ISSDS competition.”

Danielle glanced up at him.

“The competition isn’t important.”

To Danielle, this sort of contest was nothing compared to what truly mattered.

Niki was her whole world.

Nathan’s eyes darkened as he watched her.

“I’ll help take care of her,” he said softly. “I know you’ve got your hands full—juggling projects at Blackwood Research Institute and Ninesky Technologies. You can’t do this all on your own.”

He spoke as he sat down beside Alexander’s empty chair. The harsh white light of the hospital room reflected off his features, and a familiar, crisp scent lingered in the air.

Nathan reached for Danielle’s limp hand, his own warm fingers gently tracing the back of hers. “Taking care of a child, working nonstop… Has it always been like this for you?”

His closeness was just like when they were kids—nothing had changed, and yet, everything had.

Danielle pressed her lips together and quietly drew her hand back. “I’m fine. If things ever get overwhelming, I’ll ask my brother for help.”

Nathan’s hand fell empty, his expression stiffening for a moment before he caught himself and smiled.

“Sorry, that was thoughtless of me.” His tone was apologetic. “You’re not the little girl you used to be.”

It was true.

They’d grown up.

Now, boundaries mattered—even between old friends.

Nathan wasn’t in a hurry to close the distance between them. After all these years apart, a little awkwardness was only natural. Old connections would find their way again in time.
