Eloise was once just as arrogant as she was now full of regret. She tried asking around, but still couldn't find a way to reach Cecilia.
“Do I really have to go to her house?”
The thought embarrassed her, but the idea of losing over five million was even worse. Plus, the pressure from her husband and mother-in-law left her no choice.
Late that night, Eloise drove over to the Smith residence. The lights were on, but when she asked, she found out Cecilia wasn't home.
“Do you know where she went?” she asked more gently this time. The pride she'd carried earlier was nowhere to be found.
“You didn't know? Our boss spends almost every night at the hospital, taking care of her mother,” the security guard answered kindly.
“Oh. Which hospital?”
“The best one in Tudela, of course.”
Eloise nodded and left.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Queenie's health had taken a sharp downturn. One night, she suddenly collapsed. Thankfully, the doctors managed to stabilize her after intense efforts.
Cecilia stood quietly beside Nathaniel, staring at her mother lying unconscious. Her face was full of worry. Nathaniel lightly touched her arm. “Don't worry. The doctor said she's going to be okay.”
Cecilia gave a small nod. “I know.”
But she was scared.
Queenie had seemed fine when she first arrived. They were just chatting normally when suddenly, Queenie couldn't keep up anymore.
Cecilia felt like her heart was constantly on edge, terrified that her mother might not make it.
Outside, snow had started to fall. She heard the nurses in the hallway murmuring about it. Just then, Queenie stirred. Her eyes barely opened, and her dry lips moved ever so slightly. “Ceci...”
“Mom.” Cecilia leaned down immediately, her voice soft and full of concern. “You're awake. Are you feeling any pain?”
“I hope I'm not interrupting,” Eloise said with an awkward smile.
Her eyes drifted to Nathaniel for a moment. He stood tall, composed, and strikingly handsome. His presence was commanding, cool, and distant. Just from appearance alone, he was nothing like her own husband.
Eloise had met Nathaniel once or twice at Cecilia's wedding. Back then, she had genuinely envied Cecilia's luck. But later on, when the Smith family manipulated the marriage and Nathaniel didn't seem to care about Cecilia at all, Eloise finally felt relieved.
Why is she here?
Cecilia turned to Nathaniel. “I'll go talk to her.”
“Okay. I'll wait here,” Nathaniel said calmly.
“You don't have to. Head home and rest. You have work tomorrow.”
Still, Nathaniel looked uneasy. “I'll stay with you tonight.”
