Julian’s brow tightened. “Let her be. If she still falls for that, there’s nothing I can do.”

‘If she hadn’t fallen for it back then, Caleb would never have deceived her so completely.’ The thought

made Julian’s irritation flare.

Before Elliot could respond, Julian pushed back his chair and said curtly, “Get the car. We’re going to

Haven.”

When Sydney left the Shepard residence, Jeremiah offered to drive her home, but she declined without

hesitation.

Returning alone, she found Caleb waiting outside her apartment with a thermal food container.

“Nancy heard I’m living downstairs now, so she cooked some of your favorites and asked me to bring them up,” he explained.

During their three years of marriage, Nancy had been the one who looked after Sydney the most.

Sydney glanced at the size of the container. She and Tiffany could never finish that much food. Out of courtesy, she asked, “Have you eaten yet? Want to join us?”

“Can I?” A flicker of hope lit Caleb’s eyes. But instead of rushing to accept, he hesitated.

For a moment, Sydney remembered the boy he’d been-always cautious, always a little unsure.

She pressed her lips together. “It’s just dinner. Why not?”

Caleb smiled and followed her inside.

As she opened the shoe cabinet to get him slippers, his gaze fell on a pair of men’s house slippers that looked to be his size.

“These should fit me,” he said.

Most meals had been for show-him playing the dutiful husband for the Hamptons, her doing the same for the Hampton and Sterling families.

Tiffany picked up a glossy piece of pork, tasted it, then placed another piece on Sydney’s plate. “Try it. It’s your favorite.”

“Okay.” Sydney smiled faintly and lifted the pork with her fork. Before she could take a bite, her stomach heaved. Her brows drew together as she set the meat down and took a large gulp of orange juice to fight the nausea.

Until now, she hadn’t felt any clear signs of pregnancy. But suddenly, they were impossible to ignore.

Caleb, ever observant, set down his utensils. “What’s wrong? Don’t like it?”

“My fault,” Tiffany said quickly, taking the pork from Sydney’s plate and eating it herself. “I forgot her stomach’s been off lately. It’s too oily for her.”

Sydney had no intention of letting Caleb know about the pregnancy.

“Even I forgot,” she said lightly. “Saw the pork and got greedy.”
