Helen was taken to the hospital. With that settled, Diana slept properly for the first time in days.

What she had not expected was that one careless remark from a maid would spread the entire story. By morning, Albus knew everything: Helen kneeling at the gate until she fainted, the ambulance, and every last detail.

The moment Diana came downstairs, she sensed the change in atmosphere.

Albus sat at the dining table, and as soon as he saw her, he set down his spoon. "I heard that secretary came last night. They took her to the hospital?"

Diana pulled out a chair and sat down. "She knelt until she passed out."

"Outrageous!" Albus slammed his palm against the table hard enough to rattle the dishes. "She should have gone and knelt at the Kingston family's gate! What business did she have kneeling at ours? Are the Kingstons so untouchable that you have to tiptoe around them?"

He had assumed Diana restrained herself out of consideration for the long-standing relationship between the two families, unwilling to drive Helen away too harshly.

Everyone in the dining room jumped at the outburst.

Elizabeth placed a pancake into Diana's plate before turning on her husband without hesitation. "If you're angry, then go be angry at Marvin Kingston. Why are you pounding the table at your own family?"

The sudden outburst had caught Diana off guard as well. But once his words settled, a quiet warmth spread through her chest.

She let out a small laugh. "I thought you were about to scold me."

Of everything Albus valued in life, the Huttons' reputation and standing mattered most.

Helen kneeling outside their gate on a freezing night would look pitiful to any passerby. One wrong move and the story would turn against them. The Huttons would become the villains.

His reaction was the last thing she had expected.

"Scold you for what?" Albus shot her a sharp, offended look. "Do I look like someone who can't tell right from wrong?"

"I wasn't holding back because of the Kingston family," Diana said. "I just didn't want to waste my breath on her. If things had escalated last night, it would have disturbed your rest and Grandma's. Besides, she chose to kneel. Those weren't my knees on the ground. The people who should have been worried were never us."

Albus' temper eased slightly. "And where was Leon during all this?"

His people had come to their gate and caused a scene. Leon owed them a personal apology, especially since the divorce had not yet been finalized.
