At the top floor of Sterling Group, Julian sat in his chair with unhurried ease as he listened to Elliot's report. A cold edge gradually settled over his expression.

"Sir, aside from the car, which was most likely a coincidence," Elliot said as he slid another file across the desk, "I also found no record of Tristan entering or leaving Jeremiah's building."

He understood the significance of the findings. He had overlooked nothing and had delegated none of the investigation. He had assembled a team and conducted the inquiry himself.

So far, nothing linked Tristan to Jeremiah. Nothing suggested Jeremiah was anyone other than who he appeared to be.

The McLaren parked outside Jeremiah's residence matched the one Tristan owned, down to the model and color. Beyond that, however, there was no connection to pursue.

Elliot had reviewed the security footage multiple times and found nothing. Either the two men had no connection at all, or Jeremiah was exceptionally skilled at covering his tracks, with a network operating in the shadows that was far from insignificant.

Nothing else could explain how clean everything looked.

Julian's fingers tapped a slow rhythm against the closed file. His gaze shifted to Elliot. "What do you think?"

"I..." Elliot paused to consider his answer. "We didn't find anything. But I trust your read on this."

It was not flattery. He had worked beside Julian long enough to know how sharp his instincts were. Those same instincts had allowed him to seize control of the Sterling family against odds that should have made it impossible.

Julian narrowed his eyes slightly. "Then do this. Take a team to Malbrosia. Look into what Jeremiah was doing there over the past few years."

If there was a genuine connection between Jeremiah and Flint, his time in Jouleston had been too brief for much to surface.

Malbrosia was different. He had lived there for years. There would be traces.

"Myself?" Elliot hesitated. "I'm concerned about both your safety. If I'm gone from Jouleston..."

He had rarely left Julian's side during all the years they had worked together.

"Peter is here," Julian said evenly. "Tristan has only just been locked up. Flint won't move this quickly."

"That's fair." Elliot nodded. "Peter may not be the sharpest, but there's nothing wrong with his reflexes."
