Seeing Ethan like this made my stomach churn.

I felt a wave of nausea. 

I kept my face blank. 

"Don't forget, you hit me first." 

He flinched, then tried to explain patiently. 

"Everyone thought you'd drugged Jack I lost my temper—you know how I get." 

"You've never been like this before."

"You always understood me. Why are you being so stubborn today?" 

He was right. In the past, I'd always made excuses for him, talked myself into forgiving him without him even having to apologize.

That's why I ended up where I did. 

I didn't want to argue anymore.

I looked him in the eye and said calmly, 

"Ethan, let's get a divorce." 

"What?"

Ethan's patience snapped. He slammed his hand on the table, his voice rising. 

"Emily, not this again! I told you, Lily isn't a threat to you."

"She's been nothing but careful around you."

"Why can't you try to see things from her perspective?" 

"Do you have to be so aggressive?"

"She carried my child for nine months and went through hell for it."

"Can't you just be the bigger person for once?" 

He thought I was just throwing a tantrum, using divorce as a threat to make him cut ties with Lily and Jack, like I had the past few months. 

But I wasn't.

I was serious this time. 

The pain from my past life was too much.

I couldn't go through it again. 

I closed my eyes and said firmly, 

"Divorce. I mean it."

"After we split, you can be a proper family with Lily and Jack, right?" 

"Once we're divorced, I won't bother you anymore."

"I won't even show up in your life. Ethan, let's end this." 

Ethan went silent.
