Cedric glanced at her backpack, his brow furrowing slightly.
Was she planning to come right back after the divorce was finalized?
Hah. She really can't wait to be free, can she?
Stella didn't look at him. Her eyes were downcast, her face a mask of indifference.
To Cedric, it just looked like she didn't have a heart.
Briony's mood was also heavy. She looked at Cedric. "Dr. Clarke, let's call a cab. We need to get to the airport."
Cedric frowned but gave a curt nod.
The light drizzle continued to fall as the three of them took a taxi to the airport.
They had to wait to file a new international flight plan. The earliest departure was in an hour.
In the VIP lounge, Briony excused herself to make a phone call. She intentionally left them alone, hoping that Cedric might have calmed down by now and would take the initiative to talk to Stella.
Briony stayed outside for nearly an hour before she got the notification that their flight plan was approved. The plane would take off in twenty minutes.
She returned to the lounge.
Cedric was gone. Only Stella was sitting on the sofa, still and silent.
Briony sighed and sat down beside her.
Stella was staring down at her phone. The screen lock was a picture of Aster.
"Star."
Stella looked up at the sound of her name. She could see the worry in Briony's eyes.
"It's okay," Stella said, forcing a smile. "Our values and personalities just aren't compatible. It's better to end it sooner rather than later. As for Aster, he won't want for anything with the Clarke family's resources. And it's a good thing he's a boy. If he were a girl… I don't think I could have been strong enough to leave…"
Briony took her hand. "Are you really okay with letting go?"
Stella nodded. "I am…"
Hearing that, Briony didn't press the matter. She knew Stella was nowhere near as composed as she appeared. But if she and Cedric continued their endless cycle of arguments, it wouldn't be good for their child either.
The long flight back home might be their last chance.
…
The next day, a little after one in the afternoon, the private jet landed in Northborough.
