Stewart was sitting on the sofa in the living room, his thickly bandaged hands resting on his knees. Carl stood respectfully to the side. At the sound of footsteps, they both turned to look toward the staircase.

“Ms. Kensington!” Carl exclaimed.

Stewart immediately stood up, his dark, narrow eyes fixed on her.

Briony walked over to them. “Marlene tells me you have work to attend to and can’t look after Stewart for a few days?” she asked Carl.

Carl nodded vigorously. “Yes! Very busy! Incredibly busy! I won’t be able to look after Mr. Wentworth at all! My sincerest apologies!”

The acting was so stiff and awkward that Briony was grateful she didn’t laugh easily.

She kept a straight face and played along. “In that case, you should focus on your work. Marlene and the others can take care of Stewart here.”

Carl’s eyes lit up, and he glanced at Stewart, his relief written all over his face. Stewart could hardly bear to watch. He cleared his throat and waved a dismissive hand. “Since you’re so busy, you should just go.”

“Oh, right, right! I am incredibly busy. I have to get back to the firm and work late!” Carl waved to Briony. “Well, Ms. Kensington, I’ll leave Mr. Wentworth in your hands. I’m off!”

“Drive safely,” Briony said.

“Will do!” Carl beat a hasty retreat.

Just then, Marlene came back downstairs. “The room is all ready,” she announced, walking over to Stewart with a smile. “Mr. Wentworth, Ms. Kensington said you should have the east-facing guest room on the third floor since it gets the best light.”

Stewart gave her a slight nod. “Thank you for the trouble, Marlene.”

Marlene waved her hand cheerfully. “No trouble at all! We’re all family here, no need to be so formal!”
