Suspicion was a deadly thing, and so were the questioning gazes of the countless pack members.
Inez noticed how Fenric, Morrineth, and Ally were sitting in the corner of the RV discussing something, and she had a feeling that those three were talking about her. She noticed their furtive glances quite easily, having lived in the scrutiny of the packmates of the Venus pack.
Matt noticed it as well.
"Okay," he muttered, leaning back in his seat. "So hypothetically, as it is indeed not happening at the moment, if people start getting suspicious of you and start wondering if you are dangerous. What are you supposed to do?"
He turned the steering wheel to the side and questioned, "I mean, should I believe that it is my fault?"
"Partially yes. I mean, why did you save their lives? It would have been better if you had hidden your skills and watched everyone die," snorted Inez as she crossed her arms and stared at the front. Her brows were scrunched up in annoyance when she thought about how they had placed themselves in danger and risked their lives to save the lives of these people, only for them to gossip about them right in their faces.
Fenric turned his gaze away when he heard the two of them speak. He didn't continue the conversation any further, and neither did Ally and Morrineth. However, while Fenric and Ally were filled with a hint of guilt, Morrineth didn't seem to have it. She was eyeing Inez with an unreadable expression on her face.
Selene glanced at the three and stated in a harsh, cold voice, "Lycans might be known for their great lying skills, but we are also known for our loyalty. If someone saves our life, we are supposed to repay them with kindness and trust, not deception and mockery."
This time around, Morrineth had no choice but to look away, for even she couldn't continue staring at Inez after listening to Selene's words.
Huffing, Selene turned to look at Inez and smiled at her softly. She reached out and took Inez's hand into hers and softly caressed her palm.
"You are leaking," she told her.
Inez stilled and turned to look at her in horror. She looked down at her feet and hands to find the wound that was leaking.
"Not blood," Selene added in a calm voice. "You are leaking resonance. The ocean's presence being so close to you is making you a bit more exposed and out of control."
Inez exhaled in relief when she realised that she was not bleeding. She then turned to look at Selene and calmly whispered, "You are not supposed to sense that."
Selene raised her head and met Inez's gaze head-on. She said to her, "I was poisoned because I was not on my guard, Inez. I have learnt better than to let things go with the flow. Now nothing goes amiss from my eyes."
She turned to look at the ocean that was raging violently and said to Inez, "Look at how the world is bending just because you are hurt, Inez. I am afraid that the entire city will be submerged if something were to happen to you." She paused and added, "But the ocean might have to wait because my brother would most likely burn the city down."
Hearing her remark, Inez laughed softly. "You have to be kidding me."
"I am not." Selene curled her lips onto one side. "And if you really think that I am joking, then bless your heart. So, you'd better keep yourself safe, Inez or else this city will be just as safe as my legs were once."
Matt burst out laughing when he heard Selene's remark. He glanced at the woman and was about to say something, but heard her say, "You too. Control that magic of yours; it's going haywire."
All of a sudden, the laughter turned into a coughing fit, and Matt's face turned red due to the constant coughing. He refused at once, "I have no idea what you are saying." But he did restrain the leaking magic the next second.
Behind them, eyes were still turning. Questions were still forming.
And far away from the forest, inside a mansion where magic was rotting instead of blooming, sat a witch near the sacrificial altar. As the candles in her sanctum exploded, sending wax flying and splattering all over the stone floor, and the wards shut off one after another, Morga screamed out loud in pain.
