One week passed in the blink of an eye. All of Fairhaven held its breath, waiting. Reporters had been camped outside Unison Pharma for a full day.

When the lab doors finally opened, Sean and Mr. Lynn rushed forward. “Ma’am.”

Anastasia emerged, followed by Cora and the rest of the team. She looked exhausted, stifling a yawn. She had worked through the night and hadn’t slept at all.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

Mr. Lynn cleared his throat, choosing his words carefully. He had assumed failure. “The summit organizers just called. They need the data for the new drug submitted by six p.m. today. We were wondering which of the backup options you’d like to submit.”

He held out a file. Anastasia took it and saw that he had spent the week quietly purchasing the rights to several mediocre drugs from other companies. They were nothing special, but they would prevent total humiliation.

She closed the file. “None of them,” she said. “We’re submitting mine.”

She gestured to Cora, who, despite her own exhaustion, stepped forward with barely concealed excitement and handed Mr. Lynn a thick stack of lab reports. He took them, his eyes widening in utter disbelief as he read.

Anastasia wasn’t joking.
