Chapter 194: An Unexpected Encounter
Lillian raised her gaze just as a group of people entered the room. Among them was Evan, accompanied by several others she recognized from Harbortown, including Noreen. The atmosphere shifted subtly as the familiar faces approached.
Evan stepped inside and immediately spotted the girl sitting beside Sebastian. His eyes brightened with surprise and relief as he hurried over, sliding into the seat next to her. “Lillian, you’re here too! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to find you, but Sebastian never gave me a clue about where you were. What brings you to Kingston?” His voice carried a mixture of eagerness and curiosity.
The others now noticed the young woman seated beside Sebastian. She wore a simple black sweater paired with slim-fitting trousers, her appearance striking in its understated elegance. Her face was stunningly beautiful, with no hint of makeup to distract from her natural features.
Her hair was casually gathered into a loose bun, a few stray strands curling playfully around her cheeks, lending her an innocent charm that made her all the more endearing. Though they had seen many beautiful women before, this girl was different—she possessed a rare kind of beauty that was impossible to ignore.
Beyond her looks, there was an aura surrounding her that was almost otherworldly—refined and delicate, yet mysterious and profound. Just one glance from her made those around feel as though they were in the presence of someone not to be underestimated.
“I arrived yesterday,” Lillian said softly, a faint smile touching her lips. “I’m here to take care of some business in Kingston.” She then met the surprised gazes of the men watching her and added teasingly, “What’s the matter, Mr. Quinn? Don’t recognize me?”
Suddenly, Manny’s eyes widened as he seemed to recall something. Pointing at her with astonishment, he blurted out, “You’re that girl from Harbortown two years ago—Lillian!”
She nodded, returning his recognition with a warm smile. “It’s been a while. How have you all been?”
Fawks and the others soon followed and took their seats, their eyes growing even wider as they observed Sebastian pouring water for her. One of them asked in disbelief, “Sebastian, is what Manny said true?”
Sebastian cast a cold, dismissive glance at the group before turning to Lillian. “Ignore them. They’re just freeloaders looking for a free meal.” His irritation at the uninvited guests was unmistakable.
This was the first time Lillian had witnessed this more childish, protective side of him. She chuckled softly and said, “It’s alright. They’re your friends after all. The more the merrier.”
Noreen, on the other hand, watched with a heavy heart. Why couldn’t Sebastian see her? They had known each other first. If it weren’t for Lillian, surely Sebastian would have recognized her worth by now. A bitter jealousy bubbled within her, tightening her chest.
Still, she forced herself to speak gently. “Ms. Lillian, do you remember me?”
Lillian finished her bite, delicately dabbing the corner of her mouth with a napkin before turning to Noreen. “Of course. Mr. Whitmore’s childhood friend, Miss Noreen Du. How could I forget? Our first meeting was certainly memorable.”
She recalled Noreen vividly—the way every gesture screamed her claim as Sebastian’s childhood sweetheart, her constant display of superiority. Two years had passed, and Noreen had matured, become more womanly, but her mindset seemed unchanged.
Noreen’s face paled at Lillian’s words, clearly not expecting such a composed and unpredictable response. Yet she managed a smile. “That first meeting left a strong impression on me, too. Now that you’re in Kingston, maybe we could go shopping together sometime. Girls always have so much to talk about.”
For now, Noreen resolved to build some kind of connection with Lillian. Only by doing so could she hope to edge closer to the man she longed for.
