Breaking the heavy silence, Robert’s voice, roughened slightly by age or emotion, cut through the room. “Lyla,” he began, his tone firm yet tinged with disappointment, “do you realize where you went wrong?”

Lyla lifted her eyes to meet his, her face serious and tinged with regret. “Grandfather, I’m truly sorry for disappointing you. I misjudged her… and I overestimated my own abilities.”

Robert let out a sharp, contemptuous snort. “Enemy? If you want to call her that, you’d better make sure he even notices you first.”

He reclined slightly in his chair, his voice cold but deliberate. “Yes, I want you to marry Sebastian. But there’s one condition: he must be willing to marry you. If he shows no interest, then I will find someone else for you. The Soren lineage must always prove its strength.”

His words hit Lyla like a sudden gust, leaving her momentarily speechless. She quickly composed herself and responded with urgency, “Grandfather, don’t worry. I’m confident I can win his heart. Today, I was simply too impatient.”

Robert gave a slow, deliberate nod, his tone softening with an unexpected warmth. “Lyla, don’t mistake my words for criticism. Everything I say is for your benefit. You’ve always been my pride, and I refuse to see you gamble your happiness on something as fragile as love. The only true security lies in controlling your own fortune. Sebastian is a remarkable man, yes, but he’s not the only remarkable man in the world. If you don’t see a future with him, walk away before it costs you more than it should. Lyla nodded with sincere obedience. “Yes, Grandfather. I understand completely. I won’t let you down.”

Robert waved a dismissive hand, satisfied. “Good. Now, you two leave. Janus, you stay.”

“She’s not to be underestimated,” Janus said flatly. “The file might label her as nothing more than an orphan, but her tactics and foresight outshine many of Kingston’s so-called elite daughters.”

Robert, a man rarely taken by surprise, blinked in acknowledgment. His grandson was notoriously hard to impress, so hearing him speak of a girl with such respect was unexpected.

“She truly is someone worth watching,” Robert admitted quietly. “Now that I think about it, it makes sense. If she weren’t exceptional, Sebastian wouldn’t have given her a second glance. It seems Lyla has a much tougher challenge ahead than she ever imagined.”

Janus slid his hands into his pockets and let out a low, cold chuckle. “Grandfather, the truth is… you’ve overestimated Lyla or underestimated Sebastian—maybe both. Do you really believe that man can be controlled? That he’s like Rowan, who moves only when you command?”

He tilted his head slightly, his voice laced with quiet contempt. “If you’ve been paying attention to how Empire Group has been run these past few years, you’d know Sebastian is as ruthless as they come. Even I tread carefully around him. Do you honestly think he’ll follow your plan and marry Lyla just because you want him to?”
