Audrey’s words brought the room to an abrupt, heavy silence. Merrick glared at her, too furious to speak
for a moment.
“What’s going on here?” a voice suddenly cut in. Eric walked in slowly, another man following behind him.
Seeing Eric was like seeing a lifeline. Audrey ran straight into his arms, her voice dripping with grievance. “Grandfather scolded me because of Lillian! He even gave her a bedroom upstairs. Mom and I aren’t allowed to live in the same building with Grandfather, but she can? Why?”
Sebastian walked directly up to Lillian. “You’re not being bullied, are you?”
Lillian shook her head. “No, I’m fine. She’s just upset about me being here and needed to vent a little. But what are you doing here?”
Sebastian smiled. “Unno told me Mr. Merrick picked you up, so of course I had to come pick up my little fiancée.”
Eric pulled Audrey away from himself and said coldly, “The room was my idea. I was the one who had it furnished. Since Lillian is now a young lady of the Phillips family, she’ll have her place here from now on. If you don’t like it, you can go back to Murica.”
“You’re siding with her too?” Audrey stared at Eric, stunned. In all her life he had never spoken to her like that. “You’re all on her side. You all want to drive me away, don’t you? Fine. Then I’ll go!” She turned and bolted out.
Madison shot Lillian a venomous glare, then hurried after her daughter.
The room, warm moments ago, plunged into an icy stillness.
Merrick watched their retreating figures and said to the butler, “Serve the meal.”
The butler scurried off to prepare.
Seeing Merrick’s grim face, Lillian smiled and said lightly, “Grandpa, getting upset like this isn’t good for your health. You’ll end up shouldering seven or eight parts of the anger while the other person only takes two or three. You’re the one who’ll feel sick in the end. Don’t expect me to come visit you in the hospital if you make yourself ill.”
Her words made Merrick chuckle in spite of himself. “You little rascal. Is that your way of comforting me? I don’t know how you turned out with such a mischievous streak.”
Lillian grinned. “Blame Mr. Whitmore for spoiling me. If you’ve got complaints, take them to him.” She pointed straight at the man beside her.
Sebastian looked at her with a fond smile, helpless but amused.
The tension slowly ebbed away, leaving the unpleasantness behind.
Meanwhile, in the main house behind them-

Audrey stormed back to her room, tearing everything apart. She threw her belongings onto the floor, ripped clothes from her wardrobe one by one, and shredded them to pieces, muttering under her breath, “Lillian, Lillian.”
Madison came in, snatched the scissors from her hand, and snapped, “Have you gone crazy enough yet?”
Audrey glared at her mother, shouting, “No! You told me she was just an outsider. But now? She’s living in the main house. Grandfather and Eric are both treating her so well, even scolding me because of her! I’m the one who should be the real Phillips family’s young lady, but ever since Lillian showed up everything’s changed!” She clawed at another piece of clothing, ripping it apart.
“And what then?” Madison shot back, her voice sharp. “So you throw tantrums? Tear up your things? Sit here feeling sorry for yourself? Is that all you can do? Think about what you said to your grandfather today -was that how a well–bred young lady should speak? Didn’t you see how Lillian had him laughing, eating right out of her hand? Why can’t you learn from that? Keep whining and resenting and watch as Lillian takes everything that should’ve been yours.”
