Lillian nodded. “Yes, I’m back.” She prepared to step inside but noticed Sebastian hadn’t moved. She turned back, confused. “Aren’t you coming in?”

Sebastian looked at her and smiled gently. “Go on. I’ll be waiting for you at Light Estate–but don’t make me wait too long.” He knew she needed her own space right now, a place where she could mourn Leonard and reminisce without restraint.

Before he could say another word, Lillian threw herself into his arms. Her voice was thick with emotion. “Sebastian… I think I love you even more than I did before.”

The man held her tightly, his voice like velvet. “Is that so? If it makes you love me a little more, then everything I’ve done was worth it.”

He gently pulled her back and looked into her eyes. “Go. If you stay, I’m afraid I won’t be able to let you go. You know i hate being away from you for even a second.”

Under Sebastian’s watchful gaze, Lillian finally stepped through the gates of the courtyard house.

Returning to Wyvern Hill, everything looked exactly as it had when Leonard was there. The only difference was the cold tea stove in the courtyard; usually, her master kept the fire going through all four seasons.

Lillian walked over to Leonard’s usual seat and looked at the book resting on the table. “Was he reading this before he left?”

“Miss, you knew he was taken?” Fenton asked, surprised.

Lillian nodded. “Yes, I know everything.”

Fenton sighed. “When he left, he gave me strict orders not to tell you. He said if you asked, I was to say he had gone traveling and didn’t know when he’d be back.”

Hearing this, tears began to stream down Lillian’s face. Even as he was being abducted, her master was only thinking of her, terrified that she would risk her life to save him.

“Did he say anything else?”

“He told me to make sure the medicinal herbs were stored properly and to take good care of your plants,” Fenton continued. “He actually told me to put that book away, too, but I left it there. I was worried he’d forget where he was in the story when he returned.”

Lillian picked up the book, her thumb brushing against a folded corner. He must have stopped reading right there.

Fenton watched her expression and asked tentatively, “Did something really happen to him? Will he… will he be coming back?” Lillian nodded firmly. “Don’t worry. He’ll be back after a while. Just keep this place in good order for him.”

Fenton let out a long breath of relief. “That’s good. I was so worried. You have no idea how aggressive those people were when they showed up. At first, he ignored them, but then they used the Miss to threaten him, and he was forced to go with them.”

“The Miss? Which Miss?” Lillian asked, her brow furrowing.

It was clear his own daughter had broken his heart. I know she was doing it for her son, but for heaven’s sake, he is her father.
