The phone rang for nearly a minute before it was answered, and Flora was growing impatient.

As soon as the call connected, she complained, “What took you so long, Evangeline? Feeling too guilty to pick up?”

But the voice that replied was Glenn’s, familiar and calm.

“Evangeline’s in a meeting and can’t talk right now.”

“If it’s urgent, you can tell me, and I’ll pass it along.”

Hearing Glenn on the other end, Flora froze. The speech she had prepared was stuck in her throat.

She knew Glenn had feelings for Evangeline, and she didn’t want to start a fight with him over her.

Flora forced a light laugh. “Oh, it’s nothing. I just wanted to chat. If she’s busy, never mind.”

Glenn had already guessed the reason for her call.

“If you’re upset about the similarities between the Fawkes Enterprises and UME technology, you can come to me directly,” he said. “There’s no need to take your anger out on an innocent person.”

Flora knew perfectly well that the “innocent person” he was referring to was Evangeline.

Her temper flared.

“How is Evangeline innocent?”

“Glenn, I know you two are close, but there are some things you can’t cover up. If you protect her, she’ll just take advantage of it.”

At that, Glenn chuckled. “You sound like you know her very well.”

Flora nodded confidently. “Evangeline was married into the Fawkes family for five years. Of course I know her.”

Glenn asked, “Are you sure you know her? Or are you just looking at her through a biased lens because of Soren?”

His words hit their mark.

Glenn’s voice was soft and steady.

Flora bit her lip. She wanted to argue, but a part of her felt that Glenn was right.

After a moment of hesitation, Flora shook her head, deciding to stick to the issue at hand. “Even if we don't talk about her character, the fact remains that she plagiarized Poppy’s design.”

“She was married to Soren for five years, and neither of us ever knew she had any experience in design. Even if she’s some kind of prodigy, it’s impossible for her to come up with something so brilliant in such a short time.”

Before she could collect her thoughts, Glenn laughed as if he’d heard the funniest joke.

He let out a chuckle. “Are you sure Soren knows her at all?”

Flora insisted, “Of course. No matter what, they lived under the same roof. How could my brother not know what was going on with her?”

Glenn replied, “If your brother knew what was going on with her, how could he have been unaware that his negligence caused her to have a miscarriage? Or that he was the last to find out they were already divorced?”
