"Even so, my duty is to protect him. Until I sort this out, there can be nothing between Dominic and me", I concluded, more determined than ever that this was exactly what should happen. It was going to be hard to keep him away, but I had no other solution. 

"I understand. This is your decision. I hope you can also do it. Because from what you tell me about him..." I hated it when Sam was right. But she really was. 

I would have to find a way and a reason not to see him, not to show up in his life. Or if I did, I would have to pretend I didn't know him. But how would I do that? 

And just then an idea came to my mind that was as far-fetched as it was crazy. 

"And that's where you're going to come in, you're going to help me" 

"Me? How can I help you?" Since she didn't know my thoughts yet, she seemed excited. She's in for a shock. 

"You don't know Dominic and he doesn't know you, right?" I explained my plan that Sam definitely wouldn't agree with, but it was worth a shot. 

"Right..." she replied with a low half-mouth. She knew me so well that she realized the rest of the plan wouldn't please her. Still, she was listening. 

"Okay, that's good so far. In order for me to investigate freely, I'll have to keep Dominic at a distance. Do you agree with me?" I was stalling and didn't understand why. Anyway, this would shock her when she would hear. Eventually, I would still tell her. 

"I agree with you, but why do I feel I won't like this? Tell me exactly what I have to do, Becca!" OK, it was now or never. Anyway, I had no other solution and no one else to help me with this. And I knew I'd have to do some work to clarify the situation after she'd definitely say no. 

"Big thing you won't have to do. Just get to know him and keep him away from me." I was still talking in circles. 

"Meeting him will be easy, but keeping him away? I don't think I'll follow you from here." 

"It's simple. Spend time with him, hang out with him, find common topics of conversation. Somehow make him... fall for you."

Dominic's story

"Rebecca" Nick's eyes widened even more.

"What? Rebecca? Are you insane? I hope you didn't hurt her..." 

"No, stay calm. I didn't attack her in the way you think. I couldn't have physically harmed her. You just know she's the one promised to me by the Moon Goddess." 

"I know that, but you did something to her to cause you to be in this state."

"I spoke to her on the phone two days ago and she said she'd come by the house to pick up her papers and the last of her things. I told her she could come anytime she wanted as I wouldn't be home," Again I paused, rewinding in my mind every frame of what had happened yesterday. 

"And of course, you were home! Dominic, if you can't control your urges, stay as far away from her as possible." Nick understood exactly what I had done without listening to the rest, but I just felt the need to vent. 

"As I spoke to her, I heard her as she entered the house and headed for what had been her room. I immediately sensed that she had been running after her racing heartbeat. Then her phone rang. It was Logan, supposedly a good friend, and they arranged a meeting. Then I saw black in front of my eyes. I understood that the meeting was already scheduled. She had a change of clothes with her. She thought she'd take a shower first and I couldn't control myself. I walked in on her..."
