Judy’s POV

I didn’t like the idea of Megan Churchill sitting in the hospital for 23 years… kept alive by only machines. Gavin decided that bringing Eliza along would benefit us; she could tell us exactly what was wrong with Meg and how we could fix her.

Then maybe we can bring Meg home and introduce her to her daughter. I caught Gavin up a little bit on our way to the packhouse; it was later in the evening, so we knew that Eliza and Taylor would be at the packhouse around now.

I told him a bit about the curse and why we needed to get to Meg. Gavin pulled up to the packhouse and parked the car. After a beat of silence, he got out of the car and ran around to the passenger door to open it for me, offering me his hand.

My cheeks heated as I took his hand, allowing him to pull me to my feet. I stood close to him; my eyes wide from his sudden close proximity, and my cheeks growing even hotter.

“I have a few more for the protest,” I heard a familiar voice say from around the corner of the nearby shrubbery. The shrubs almost hid us so that we couldn’t be seen, but the voices carried as if they were right next to me… speaking to me. “They also don’t want her as our Luna.”

“Good,” the other familiar voice said. “She won’t make a good Luna. Alpha Gavin has to see that. He should pick someone more in his league and someone we can trust.”

“Save your speech for the rally,” the other voice chuckled. “We need to get back to work so we can go home.”

The voices faded as they walked away, and I was left frozen in place. Gavin’s eyes were trained on my face the entire time, and I could tell without looking at them that they were dark and he was holding himself back.

“What the hell was that?” He asked, his voice low and dangerous.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and refused to look him in the eyes because of pure shame.

“That was the she-wolves of your pack not wanting me as the luna,” I murmured, my cheeks heating again, only this time for a different reason.

“How long had this been going on?” He asked. “You aren’t surprised by their words, so I’m assuming you’ve heard them before.”

I bit my lower lip, nibbling on it slowly.

“Yes,” I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. “I’ve heard them speaking like this before.”

“Oh, Hey Gavin… hey Judy,” Eliza said as she stepped out of the newly parked car. I blinked, not realizing another vehicle had just pulled up.

Beta Taylor got out of the driver’s side as Eliza stepped out of the passenger side. She looked tired, and from her white trench coat, I knew she was heading home from work.

But despite her tiredness, she still managed to smile at me.

“Hey, Eliza,” I said in return. “Beta Taylor.”
