He was going to take a nap later. If he drank coffee now, he could forget about catching some shuteye.
Nate said, seemingly self-deprecatingly, “Are you worried that I can’t afford a cup of coffee? Or are you afraid I’ll poison you?”
“You’re overthinking it. It’s lunch break.”
Nate chuckled. “I guess I am overthinking it. I thought you didn’t need breaks.”
“I’m human, too. I’m not made of steel. I get tired and need rest too.”
Nate ordered a cup of coffee for himself before asking the server to get a glass of water for Sonny.
“You can go ahead with whatever it is you’d like to say to me. I’m listening.”
Sonny glanced at his watch again and said, “Five minutes have passed already, and I only gave you twenty.”
Nate was speechless for a moment before he said, “Mr. Brown, first, let me apologize to you. That day, I had a bad attitude, and I spoke impulsively.”
“I remember telling you that I’ve accepted your apology. Please get straight to the point. I don’t like beating around the bush.”
“I want Everly. I want to be the father of her kids!” Nate said straightforwardly.
Sonny chuckled, then said, “That’s your business. If you like Ms. Flemming, you should pursue her. I don’t think there’s any use telling me.”
“You’re my love rival!”
“Ms. Flemming and I are just working together. We’re not lovers. You don’t have to view me as a rival.”
Nate harrumphed coldly. “Mr. Brown, I might not be as smart and capable as you are, but I’m not an idiot. We’re both men. Do you dare say that you have no romantic inclinations for Everly Flemming whatsoever?
“She only just published that statement this morning, but then had lunch with you, even arriving together. No way anybody believes nothing’s going on between the two of you.
“Mr. Brown, I want to compete with you fairly, but I’m in a better position than you are because I’m a Clearfield local. So, I advise you to give up and stop competing with me.”
