Lizetta's entire body went rigid. It was Grandpa Nelson.

How could she have forgotten that the window to her grandfather's study looked directly over this part of the courtyard?

Filled with panic, she tried to push Remington away and look up at the second floor. But the man swiftly pivoted, his large hand pressing against the back of her head as he shielded her securely against his chest.

At the exact same moment, Lizetta heard a dull thud. Something had plummeted from the second floor and nailed Remington right in the back of the head.

Alarmed, she looked down and saw an apple rolling into the nearby flowerbed, completely smashed to pieces.

She frantically pushed him back. "Where did it hit you? Let me see."

Remington didn't look like he was in any pain. He simply curled his lips into a reassuring smile.

"I'm fine. It missed."

"Liar, I heard the sound. Where did it hit you?"

Lizetta knew she had heard a solid thud.

She stood on her tiptoes, framing his face with her hands as she searched his head for any swelling or bruises.

In that moment, she was entirely focused on him, completely forgetting the furious spectator looming above them.

Remington suddenly had the distinct feeling that a second apple was already on its way down.

He quickly grabbed her delicate wrists and said softly, "It just grazed the back of my head. It doesn't hurt. Grandpa is still watching."

That brought Lizetta crashing back to reality. She froze and slowly tilted her head up toward the second floor.

Meeting Grandpa Nelson's complicated, disapproving glare, Lizetta silently retracted her hands.

"Grandpa..."

*Smash!*

Nelson slammed the window shut and vanished from sight.

Five minutes later, in the study.

Lizetta and Remington stood side by side in front of Nelson's massive oak desk, looking like two children waiting to be reprimanded.
