Liz pressed a kiss to the side of the man's face, leaving a crisp smack against his cheek.

Remington adjusted his hold beneath her knees, his steps light and effortless as he carried her down the long stone staircase.

Liz swung her legs slightly, resting her cheek against his broad shoulder.

With his wide frame and long legs, Remington covered the distance in quick, ground-eating strides.

Clinging to his back, Liz felt an overwhelming sense of security. She closed her eyes, basking in the warm sunlight, entirely enveloped by Remington's comforting, familiar scent.

Within moments, she let out a couple of soft yawns, drifting into a lazy, half-asleep state.

Outside the cemetery gates, Nelson Madden and the others were still waiting. Jerome was in the driver's seat, while Nelson and Bernice sat in the back, chatting quietly.

"Liz, Liz..."

Bernice was clearly growing anxious, craning her neck to peer out the car window again and again.

Nelson gently patted her arm. "Liz will be right down. Why don't you drink some water? If she's still not back after you finish, we'll give her a call."

Bernice nodded at that. She was just about to take a sip when her eyes suddenly lit up. She pointed eagerly out the window.

"Liz!"

Nelson leaned over to look. Sure enough, he spotted the tall, broad-shouldered man carrying the slender woman on his back as they descended the steep steps.

Seeing Remington carry her down the hill, Nelson felt a begrudging flicker of approval.

"At least he knows how to take care of her..."

Bernice stared blankly out the window. As Remington and Liz drew closer, their silhouettes briefly obscured by a patch of pine trees, she practically leaned half her frail body out the window to keep them in sight.

Fearing she might hurt herself, Nelson quickly put a hand up to shield her from the window frame, patting her shoulder reassuringly.
