"Huh? Why the sudden transfer to Zion City?"

Gia paused her folding and looked at Kimberley in surprise.

"Is Candy..."

Gia's face clouded with worry. She had been taking care of Kimberley since her postpartum confinement and had helped raise Candy ever since.

Kimberley was even-tempered, easy to get along with, and generous—a truly wonderful employer.

Over the years, Gia had developed a genuine familial bond with Kimberley. Since Gia had practically raised Candy from birth, hearing this sudden demand for a transfer was startling.

Naturally, she worried that Candy's condition had relapsed.

Realizing the misunderstanding, Kimberley hastily waved her hands.

"No, no, it's not that. I just picked up a job recently, and I'll need to be in Zion City for a while."

She rushed to explain, but in truth, ever since running into Jerome, her heart hadn't stopped hammering.

She was terrified that he had noticed something and would come looking for them.

"Mommy, is Zion City fun?"

Candy's eyes lit up at the mention of the city. She had never set foot outside of Tranquil Meadows in her entire life.

Kimberley kissed her daughter's cheek, gently rocking her in her arms.

"Of course it is! Zion City has an amusement park even bigger than the one here. Once our Candy is discharged, Mommy will take you there."

Candy excitedly threw her arms around Kimberley's neck, puckering her lips to plant a kiss on her cheek. Resting her little chin on her mother's shoulder, she asked softly.

"Mommy, can Daddy come with us?"

Kimberley's chest tightened. She reached up to stroke her daughter's hair and replied gently.

A moment later, Candy's breathing leveled out, and she fell fast asleep.

Sitting nearby, Gia couldn't help but speak up.

"Candy is growing up fast, and she's been asking about her dad more and more lately. You won't be able to keep up this lie for much longer. Kimberley, you're still so young. Why don't you find a nice guy to date and give Candy a real father?"

When Candy was smaller, she didn't know what it meant to miss a father.

It was only half a year ago, when she had been seriously ill and hospitalized, that she saw the kids in the same ward constantly being held by their dads. That was when she suddenly started asking for her own.

At the time, looking at her daughter's pale, fragile, longing face, Kimberley simply couldn't bear to tell the child that she either didn't have a father or that he was dead.

So, she told her that Daddy was away working on something very important and couldn't come back to visit.

On the morning of Candy's surgery, she had placed a bunny plushie by the bed, telling her that Daddy had rushed back the night before specifically to cheer her on.
