"Who is hospitalized in here?"

Jerome spun around and demanded, his confusion mounting.

If Kimberley wasn't actually sick, why on earth had Lizetta insisted she was? Every instinct he had screamed that this room was hiding a massive secret.

"She's a relative's child. Her parents are incredibly busy right now, so I'm just keeping her company while she's admitted."

Kimberley gripped her hands together, fighting with everything she had to appear calm and collected.

He was looking directly at the patient information card hanging from the frame.

"Your relative's child is named Candy? Which relative? I don't recall you ever having family like that."

"She's my cousin's child. We aren't particularly close, but we've been interacting more over the last couple of years."

"Your cousin? And her husband's last name is Evert?"

Jerome took a slow step toward her. Kimberley instinctively backed away, stammering.

"Yes, exactly. His last name is Evert, hence the name Candy Evert."

It was impossible for Jerome to miss her frantic anxiety. He offered a slow nod.

"Then why does the emergency contact form list your name as her legal guardian?"

Kimberley and Candy. It sounded exactly like a mother and daughter.

Kimberley desperately waved her hands, forcing a hollow laugh.
