Kimberley looked into her daughter's bright, expectant eyes. For a moment, her mind drifted, rendering her completely speechless.

Was this the undeniable pull of blood? Candy hadn't even locked eyes with Jerome, yet she was already drawn to him, eager for his affection.

A noise echoed from outside. Realizing Jane had returned, Kimberley quickly patted her daughter's head and led Candy out.

Meeting Jane's gaze, she immediately looked down at Candy. "Why don't you go watch some TV, sweetie?"

Candy's screen time was usually strictly limited to an hour a day, and she had already maxed it out. Her mother only let her watch extra when she was in an incredibly good mood.

Candy perked up instantly. It confirmed her suspicion that her mother wasn't afraid of or annoyed by Mr. Long-Legs. Maybe her mom even liked him, considering how happy she seemed. The next time she saw Mr. Long-Legs, she was definitely going to ask if he liked her mom, too.

As Candy skipped off to the TV, Kimberley quickly grabbed Jane's arm. "Did he leave? Did he ask anything?"

Jane shook her head. "Not a word. He just got in the elevator and left."

Seeing Kimberley visibly exhale in relief, Jane held onto her. "That Mr. Madden... he's Candy's father, isn't he?"

Kimberley pressed her lips together and stayed silent, which was all the confirmation Jane needed. Glancing over at Candy by the TV, Jane turned back to Kimberley.

"Her father has already tracked you down. Plus, it doesn't look like he's entirely indifferent to you. He seems like a genuinely kind, polite man. Kim, don't blame me for overstepping, but I think you should give him a chance—even if it's just for Candy's sake."
