Yvonne sat up groggily, stretching and rubbing her sore waist and shoulders before throwing back the covers and getting out of bed.

Just then, the bedroom door opened and Bennett walked in, carrying a glass of warm milk.

“Why aren’t you at the base today?” Yvonne asked, surprised to see him.

Usually, he was gone before dawn, driving back to the barracks.

“I have the day off. I need to go back to the Thompson estate for a bit,” Bennett said, walking over and handing her the warm milk.

Yvonne took the glass, downed half of it in one go, and set it on the nightstand.

“Is something wrong at the estate?” she asked.

“The business with Eden is settled, and now Frank wants to make peace. He’s using me as an excuse to get Mom to come home for dinner,” Bennett explained, then asked, “Want to come with me? It’s just a casual meal.”

“I don’t want to go,” Yvonne said flatly.

Hearing this, Bennett wrapped an arm around her, taking her hand and letting his gaze fall on the brilliant diamond ring sparkling on her right ring finger.

“You’ve already accepted my ring. Are you getting cold feet about meeting the in-laws now?”

Yvonne swatted his arm away.

“Your mother doesn’t like me. My being there will only upset her. You should go by yourself.”

“Alright,” Bennett nodded. “It’s probably for the best. I need to inform them today that we’re planning to get our marriage license, and I’ll have to negotiate the dowry for you. It might be awkward if you were there.”

“Well then, I’ll leave it all to you, Mr. Bennett Thompson,” Yvonne said, looping her arms around his neck and standing on her toes to give him a light peck on the lips.

Bennett’s arm tightened around her waist as he deepened the kiss.

Just as they were lost in the moment, a strange, rhythmic tapping sound came from the bedroom door.

Yvonne instinctively pushed Bennett away and walked toward the door. “That must be Bullet, here to wake me up.”
