“We’ll be back soon. Mom’s cooking dinner tonight—no steamed buns, though. I’m taking Ms. Anya to buy some stuffed buns instead.”
Leo’s storage place was out near the edge of town, just a stone’s throw from a busy little market. It was nothing like the big city—this town was old-school, crowded, and the roads weren’t exactly smooth sailing.
Leo parked by the curb. “Ms. Anya, let’s get out and walk from here. The road ahead is pretty tight, and if there’s a jam, we’ll never get the car back out.”
He barely finished talking before Anya bounced out of the car, grinning as she spotted the wisps of smoke rising from food stalls up ahead. She all but skipped down the street, eyes shining. “Chad, I love how lively it is here! The whole place just feels so real.”
Watching her light up, Leo couldn’t help but laugh. What a little gem he’d found.
He took her wrist, and Anya pointed to a spot up ahead. “Chad, look at that line! What are they selling?”
“That’s for baked flatbreads,” Leo told her.
“Flatbread stuffed with braised pork is the best,” she said, her mouth already watering.
Leo just chuckled.
“Hey, Chad, they’ve got those little yellow buns too!”
Leo led her over and bought her one. “This is a cornbread bun—my grandpa used to eat these all the time.”
Anya nibbled on it as they walked, analyzing every bite. “Chad, it’s not as soft as a regular bun.”
They reached the stuffed bun shop Leo always went to. “Hey boss, can you make me thirty? Half meat, half veggie.”
The owner grinned. “No problem—tell you what, I’ll throw in a couple extras for you.”
Anya’s eyes went wide. “Chad, why so many?”
He shrugged. “There’s a whole crew at the office, and they’re all guys. Trust me, one or two just isn’t enough.”
Anya nodded, just finishing her cornbread as Leo handed her a steaming fresh meat bun. “Careful, it’s hot. Take it slow.”
