Massive snowflakes, large as cotton balls, fell thick and fast.
Before long, a thick layer of snow capped Henry's hat and coat.
Hansen's delicate plants had already been moved into the greenhouse.
Where the bonsai trees usually sat, there was a stone pedestal now covered in a heavy blanket of snow. Seeing his mother drawing patterns in the snow there, Henry desperately wanted to join. He stood on his tiptoes, frustrated that he couldn't reach.
Andre, having just finished washing up, stepped outside. He hooked his hands under his son's arms, hoisted him up, and set him right on top of the stone pedestal to play.
It snowed late into the night. The yard was pure chaos; not a single patch of untouched snow remained, entirely trampled and destroyed by the rowdy bunch.
Eventually, Henry's toy shovel was abandoned on the pedestal as his father scooped him up.
Mia's snow boots were soaked, and Molly's gloves were wet through.
Even Hansen was sporting a runny nose. Begrudgingly, they all retreated indoors.
Once inside, Andre pulled off Henry's socks. Seeing the boy's pale little feet, he wrapped a large hand around them—they were icy cold.
Even the thickest winter boots hadn't completely kept the chill out.
Strangely enough, though, the kid's back was drenched in sweat from running around so much.
"Daddy, Mommy's feet are cold too!"
Andre looked over at his wife, who had kicked off her socks and was standing barefoot on the heated floor. He scooped up his son and grabbed his wife's hand, marching them upstairs for a hot shower to warm up.
Downstairs, Hansen let out a sneeze. Andre came back down, saw his father sniffing, and quietly went to the water dispenser. He mixed a few cups of preemptive cold medicine and handed one to his dad. "Drink this, take a hot shower, and get to bed. You'll feel fine tomorrow."
With a few more cups left on the counter, Andre instructed a maid, "Bring one to Molly."
As for his own two troublemakers, he carried their cups upstairs himself.
Jade blinked in surprise when she got hers. "My brother made this for me?"
In the winter, Andre was basically a walking space heater. Mia always burrowed into his arms and threw her icy feet over his legs, demanding he warm them up. "Mia, why are your hands and feet still so cold?"
Henry peeked up. "Daddy, are my hands and feet cold?"
Andre hugged his own personal little furnace. "Are you sweating again?"
The little guy just pressed his face closer, giggling.
Outside the window, the blizzard raged on, the howling wind and swirling frost reminding them of what a true winter felt like.
The chaotic footprints in the yard were quickly buried beneath fresh snowfall, making it look as though no one had ever stepped foot there.
In the latter half of the night, the snow finally stopped. Everyone slept soundly.
Henry had somehow migrated back to the center of the bed, sprawled out in his usual wildly uninhibited sleeping position.
Mia was fast asleep, sprawled near the edge of the bed with her back completely exposed. Reaching over, Andre gently pulled the covers up to keep her warm.
