Leo held his ground. "Then just do me this favor, Mr. Gale. Point me toward the guy pulling the strings."
Mr. Gale patted Leo heavily on the shoulder, shook his head in silence, and got into his car without giving away a single detail.
Leo took a deep breath, turned on his heel, and got back into his own car.
He sat in the driver's seat, his expression cold and detached as he watched Mr. Gale's car speed out of the garage. Once he was completely alone, he leaned back against the headrest, letting his frustration wash over him for a few minutes. Then, he dialed his girlfriend's number.
"Hey, Leo! Did you miss me?" Anya's bright, bubbly voice was an instant cure for the heavy gloom in his chest.
"Yeah, I missed you. Are you off work yet? I had some errands downtown, so I can swing by and pick you up."
Anya had already packed her bag. "Give me one second! Let me just double-check with Janice to make sure she doesn't need anything else."
She kept him on the line as she jogged over to Janice's office.
Janice laughed when she saw her. "Your bag is already packed, what else could I possibly give you to do? It's quitting time. Get out of here."
Anya lifted the phone back to her ear. "Leo, I'm officially off the clock! I'll wait for you in the lobby."
She hung up and squeezed into the crowded elevator with the rest of the rush-hour exodus.
She hadn't been waiting downstairs long when Leo's car pulled up to the curb. "Get in. Let's go get some food."
Anya happily climbed into the passenger seat. "I totally handled the drama at the office today!"
Leo never let his own stress bleed onto her. "Oh yeah? Who started it?"
"Patty, obviously. Everyone knows we can't stand each other. But she lost the argument, just like always." Anya looked incredibly proud of herself.
Leo chuckled. "Look at you, leveling up. Weren't you the freshman who used to call my uncle crying in the middle of the night? Now you're winning office battles. You've definitely picked up Molly's attitude. Maybe you should take a few lessons from your aunt Mia, too."
Anya shook her head rapidly. "No way. Aunt Mia's combat skills take decades to master. I could never."
