When I was pregnant with our first child, Caleb drove me to the doctor for a checkup, and I was thrilled.

But halfway there, Sophia called, asking him to take Max to the vet.

Without a second thought, Caleb left me by the side of the road and told me to grab a cab by myself.

As I nervously waited for a ride, I was accidentally clipped by a passing cyclist and fell to the ground,

losing the baby.

In Caleb's mind, I guess Max and I were about equally important,

but clearly, I didn't measure up to Max's owner.

From that day on, I swore I'd never love Caleb again.

But I never expected her to have the nerve to bring that dog to my parents' grave, blatantly taunting me.

She was trying to get under my skin, trying to make me lose control.

And sure enough, I felt the blood rush to my head, and anger almost overtook me.

I gritted my teeth and shouted:

"Caleb, take your little girlfriend and get lost!"

Sophia, however, ignored my fury and quickly stepped forward, her voice laced with fake sadness:

"Madison, I just heard about your parents."

"I'm so sorry for what happened."

"I wanted to bring Max here to pay my respects to your parents."

Sophia feigned sorrow, but her eyes betrayed her, gleaming with satisfaction.

With my parents gone, it seemed like her rise to the top was just around the corner.

I glanced at Caleb, who looked caught in the middle.

If he knew I had deceived him, hurt him, I'm sure he'd slap me without hesitation.

And then he'd probably point his finger at my face and scold me for being heartless.

But she was Sophia, Caleb's dream girl from ten years ago.

Even though his brow furrowed and his displeasure was obvious,

I said it and turned to walk away, ignoring the joy on Sophia's face.

But Caleb grabbed my hand.

"Madison, stop. I'm not going to divorce you!"

"Caleb, I told you, Nathan's back in town."

"Is this because of Nathan?"

I frowned, confused as to why he was bringing up Nathan, my high school friend who had moved abroad.

"Mr. Hayes, I—"

I pulled my hand away from his, about to explain, but then I felt a warm liquid trickle from my nose.

The next second, Caleb completely panicked.

"Madison!"

The last thing I heard was Caleb's frantic call.
