The more Autumn tried to explain, the worse things looked for her. If she couldn’t make herself clear, there was no way they’d let her leave.

She was panicking inside. “Devin and I were classmates,” she blurted. “I was confused earlier. I heard something happened to him, so I brought my son to pay our respects.”

The officer eyed her suspiciously. “A minute ago, you said Devin was your child’s father. Now he’s just a classmate? Do you think this is a game?” His tone was sharp. “Giving false statements is a crime.”

Flustered, Autumn repeated, “He’s my classmate. I just got mixed up before.”

The officer shook his head. “Doesn’t sound like just classmates to me. More like you were lovers, right?” He leaned in. “Was Devin your lover?”

Autumn’s heart pounded. She didn’t dare admit it, but if she kept denying, they’d dig deeper. If Mr. Walker found out she was here, she’d be trapped.

After an agonizing pause, she finally admitted, “Yes. Devin is my son’s father. We were together.”

The officer kept pressing. “Why didn’t you come to claim his body before? What are you hiding?”

“I only found out recently,” Autumn replied, her voice trembling. “Officer, Devin knew how to swim. There’s no way he drowned by accident. Something’s off—he was murdered.”

The officer took notes, continuing his questions.

Just then, a man walked by the interrogation room. He was from Riverdale, in town for an inspection. He instantly recognized Autumn—holding a child, being questioned by the police. His heart skipped a beat. He quietly told the officer beside him to pause the interview.

Mr. Walker’s wife being interrogated? If word got out, or if Mr. Walker himself heard about it, things would blow up.

But Pete—Mr. Walker’s coworker and rival—was almost hoping for drama.

He called the officer out. “What’s that woman in there done?”

Pete was already plotting to use this to smear Mr. Walker’s name.

But what the officer told him was even juicier.

“Deputy Lane, her name is Autumn. We brought her in on suspicion of child abduction. But she claims she was the lover of Devin—the man who drowned in the river. She says she came with her son to mourn his real father.”

“Autumn was Devin’s lover? And the kid is Devin’s?” Pete was stunned for a second, then burst out laughing. “Ha! Mr. Walker really got played. He always denied it, but looks like all those Riverdale rumors were true. Let me see the statement.”

The officer handed over the file.
