Less than ten minutes later, the paramedics arrived with a stretcher, and every executive and employee in the room quietly made their exit, as if it were an unspoken agreement. 

Their livelihoods depended on the man standing before me. 

"Your kid. Shouldn't you be at the hospital with the baby mama?" 

I kept my voice calm, almost amused. 

Nathan clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white as he fought to stay composed. 

"Madison, I swear to God, I didn't cheat."

"That baby isn't mine." 

There was a time when I'd have told him to watch his words, but whether the kid was his or not—what did that have to do with me anymore? 

I pulled out my phone and scrolled to two photos.

One was a lipstick stain on his shirt, the other was a note from Zoe, scribbled with the words my love. 

"I forgot to take a picture of you and Zoe making out at the hospital that day."

"But you're not about to tell me kissing is just some casual coworker thing, right?" 

He stared at the phone, his expression crumbling, like the last bit of strength had been drained from him.

His voice came out hoarse. 

"Madison, you have to believe me. It was just that one time."

"She climbed into my bed first, wearing nothing but her nightgown." 

"I remember the exact date."

"You can check my phone—there's no way she's pregnant with my kid."

"And I used protection that night." 

"Madison, it was just once."

"Please, forgive me. I swear, it will never happen again—"
