Frieda narrowed her eyes. "Relax. Your father is on watch. If she shows up unexpectedly, he'll give us a signal."

Only then did Xander speak. "Mom, do you really think Mrs. Sylvester is just some ordinary person? She's testing our family right now."

Testing them?

Frieda looked completely bewildered. "How is she testing us?"

Xander explained what had happened.

When she heard that Caitlin was using her own falling out with Elsa as a test, Frieda was surprised. "This Mrs. Sylvester is certainly clever, isn't she?"

"Mrs. Sylvester is a true high-society matriarch. Besides, a marriage arrangement with the Sylvester family isn't something just anyone can secure. Of course she's going to be cautious."

"And so what if she's clever? She can play her games, but we can play them better," Xander said, pausing for effect. "This time, our family has to put on a good show. We need to lock down this marriage arrangement with the Sylvesters as soon as possible."

Frieda nodded. "Don't you worry, Xander. I know exactly what to do."

After their conversation, Xander went back to his room to play video games.

Elsa couldn't quite describe the feeling. A mother-in-law as wonderful as Frieda was a rare find, and it was laughable that Gertrude had spoken so ill of her. Elsa felt more and more certain that she had made the right decision in cutting ties with people like Caitlin and Gertrude.

"It's alright, Mom. You didn't know the circumstances," Elsa said with a smile. "Why would I blame you? Besides, it's not a big deal. Please don't worry about it."

Frieda smiled, relieved. "Elsa, life is all about meeting new friends. Even though that Miss Kensington comes from a prestigious background, our family has never been one to curry favor with the powerful. I heard the whole story from Xander, and none of this was your fault!"

"You have to have self-respect. You can't go crawling back to her and apologizing just because of her status. Our family doesn't need friends like that!"

Since Caitlin was testing them, the most important thing to do was the exact opposite of what she'd expect. They had to have Elsa convey to Caitlin that the Forrester family was principled and never kowtowed to the wealthy and powerful.
