Amelia arrived home with a raging fever that wouldn’t break.

Silas stumbled in drunk, and seeing her unconscious and burning up,

panicked. He rushed her to the hospital.

When Amelia finally regained consciousness, she opened her heavy eyelids

to see a concerned nurse.“Mrs. Sterling, you’re awake! You had quite a fever. Mr. Sterling was so worried. He was right here by your side until he got a call a little 

while ago. Should I get him? He’ll be so relieved.”

Amelia shook her head, her voice raspy.“No.”

The nurse simply nodded, changed her IV, and left.

The room fell silent, so silent that Amelia could hear Silas talking on the

phone outside. He was usually so composed, only losing control around her. But

now, his voice was laced with a giddy excitement she’d never heard before. 

Footsteps faded. He was gone.

Gathering her strength, she got out of bed and followed. A few floors down, she saw Silas helping Bethany out of the OB–GYN clinic. Their faces were 

radiant, their smiles almost uncontainable. 

Spotting Amelia, Bethany feigned surprise. “Mrs. Sterling! Fancy seeing you

Silas looked up, his eyes meeting Amelia’s. He quickly let go 

of Bethany’s

arm.“Amy! I, uh, I was going downstairs to get your medicine and bumped into

Bethany. She’s pregnant, so I was just making sure she was okay.” His

explanation tumbled out, laced with nervous energy.

Amelia’s gaze fell on Bethany’s slightly swollen belly. Her breath caught in

her throat. She closed her eyes for a moment before speaking.“Bethany…when 

did you find out you were pregnant? Where’s the father?” 

Bethany placed a hand on her stomach, her face glowing.“Just found out

today. A month along! The father couldn’t make it, but he’s over the moon. He

bought me a couple of houses, transferred a million dollars into

my account, and 

he’s putting on a city–wide fireworks display tonight to celebrate!” 

She beamed, oblivious to the pain she was inflicting. Amelia managed a 

weak smile.“Really?” 

Bethany’s smile widened. “Yep! Mrs. Sterling, are you free for dinner tonight?

I’ll have the baby daddy join us.”

Silas’s face darkened. He shot Bethany a warning look.“No, she isn’t. Amy 

doesn’t have time for that.” He turned to Amelia, his voice softening.“Amy,

you’re not fully recovered yet. You shouldn’t be wandering around. And don’t 

mind Bethany. She’s just a spokesperson.”

After picking up her prescriptions, Amelia went home. Silas, perhaps still agitated from his encounter with Bethany, seemed distracted. He dropped her off and immediately excused himself to his study, claiming urgent

work.

Back in her room, Amelia received a text from Bethany. It was a picture of a

positive pregnancy test,

A series of taunting messages followed: Amelia, I know you figured it out today, Silas is the father. Don’t fool yourself into thinking he’s so in love with

you. If he was, what does that make me? 

You have no idea how obsessed he is with me. Every year, on your birthday, on your anniversary, after he puts you to bed, he comes to me. He’s insatiable. We go through boxes of condoms. I can barely walk the next day.

We’ve made love in his Maybach, in his office, even in your marital bed. Seventy–two positions, Amelia. He’s tried them all with me. They say sex and love are inseparable. Has he ever been that passionate with you?

Amelia took a deep breath, forcing down the rising tide of emotions. As she
