"So you got hit," Nathan asked calmly. "What does that have to do with me?"
That last sentence froze Lottie in place. In an instant, the color drained from her face.
Juliet looked even more shocked. She stared at Nathan and said, "What do you mean, Mr. Lowe? Lottie is your woman! Someone hitting her is a blatant disrespect toward you!"
Nathan looked at Lottie. "You're my woman? Did you tell her that?"
Lottie tried to explain. "I…"
Juliet pressed her, "Lottie, what exactly is going on between you and Mr. Lowe? Why won't he admit it?"
Lottie felt humiliated.
The truth was, in the private room earlier, Nathan had barely interacted with her at all. He had even clearly said he was already married.
But she was vain and cared about appearances, so she had bragged about it in front of Juliet. She let all the girls at the club believe that she belonged to Nathan, all just to boost her own status.
"Talk. Why aren't you saying anything now? Are you my woman? Have I ever even touched you?" Nathan said coldly.
It felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over Lottie's head.
Juliet grabbed her arm. "Lottie, what's going on?"
Juliet was looking at her.
Lottie lifted her head and realized Ivy and Madge were also watching. It felt like everyone was staring at her, as if she were a joke.
"Mr. Lowe, this is between us. There's no need to talk about it in front of outsiders," Lottie said quietly.
Nathan replied, "And who exactly do you think is an outsider here?"
He turned and looked at Ivy before ordering, "Come here."
Ivy walked over.
Nathan reached out, took her hand, and laced his fingers through hers. They stood there, holding hands.
Both Lottie and Juliet were stunned.
