The Myriad Arts Order stood in the western reaches of the North. Its Order Master, Fairbourne, was a middle-aged woman with a Golden Immortal Level Three cultivation, a blunt and open way about her, and a fuse that burned hot.
Her order was built across a plain. There was no towering mountain gate, no guarded palace complex, only old stone towers standing here and there in careful order across the open ground.
Every stone tower was an arcane implement. Each one could fight alone, or combine with the others into a formation, and once they joined together, the power was boundless.
When she saw Master Wellspring, she was in the training field scolding her disciples.
Her voice carried so far it could be heard from a long way off. She wore dark red arcane robes, and a string of bells hung at her waist, chiming with every step she took.
At the sight of Master Wellspring covered in wounds, she stopped short for a beat. Then she threw her head back and laughed, the sound bright and booming enough to send leaves pattering down from the trees.
"Master Wellspring, did somebody beat you up? Who had that kind of nerve? Tell me, and I'll hit him back for you! See if I don't beat him until he's crawling around looking for his teeth!"
Master Wellspring told the whole story again.
This time, he laid it out in even finer detail: Venerable Starwick's Writ of Pursuit, Venerable Emberlain and Venerable Frostgrave hunting the Aureate Heir, the process by which the Wellspring Order pledged itself to him, the dangers inside the Primordial Sanctuary, and how Morgana had been injured.
His voice had gone hoarse, but every word came through clear.
Fairbourne's laughter slowly died away. The smile left her face too, and what replaced it sat hard and heavy across her features.
Her brows knotted into one tight ridge. Without seeming to notice, her fingers rubbed the bells at her waist, drawing out a crisp string of chimes.
"Venerable Starwick... that old bastard. I've been unable to stand him for years. With the celestials backing him, he runs wild across the northern region and bullies our human cultivators."
"Before, I put up with him because I couldn't beat him. Now there is your Wellspring Order, there is Beastmoor Ridge, and with my Myriad Arts Order added in, the three of us can join hands. What the hell is there to fear?"
"Pole Star Hall may be strong, but even they only have three thousand elite men-at-arms. Put our three houses together, and we have two thousand of our own. Add the ancient wards of Beastmoor Ridge, and that does not mean we cannot fight!"
"Fairbourne clapped Master Wellspring on the shoulder, hard enough that he nearly coughed blood.
But every bit of her gaze was honest."
It was the kind of honesty that belonged to someone who had been worn down by years and had seen straight through the world.
"""Master Wellspring, set your mind at ease. My Myriad Arts Order will send troops.
Two hundred disciples. Every one of them is skilled in spells and formations. In a direct assault, we may not match the Azure Cloud Sword Order, but when it comes to defense and support, if Myriad Arts claims second, no one dares claim first."
"So rest easy. If Venerable Starwick wants to flatten Beastmoor Ridge, he will have to walk over my dead body first!"
Master Wellspring bowed deeply. "Mistress Fairbourne, this great kindness and grace will be remembered by Wellspring Order for all eternity."
"Don't hand me that empty stuff."
"Fairbourne waved it off. ""When the war is over, have that young heir of yours buy me a drink.
""I heard he has the Aureate Codex in his hands. That is something left by the First Patriarch of the Aureate Way. When the time comes, let him explain to me exactly what is so mysterious about that Aureate Codex."""
The two order masters did not leave their words hanging in the air.
In less than three days, the Azure Cloud Sword Order and the Myriad Arts Order each brought their elite disciples to Beastmoor Ridge.
"The Azure Cloud Sword Order arrived with three hundred disciples, all at True Immortal Realm Level Nine and above.
Each wore a blue Daoist robe, a longsword hanging at the waist, sword aura cutting cold around them."
"Their steps landed as one.
With every footfall, the ground gave a faint tremor."
"At their head was Cloudspire, Order Master of the Azure Cloud Sword Order.
He wore a blue Daoist robe, his white hair drifting around him, his whole bearing clean and remote like an immortal who had stepped down into the world."
"The Myriad Arts Order arrived with two hundred disciples, their cultivation also at True Immortal Realm Level Nine and above.
They wore robes of every color, and the arcane implements in their hands ran the full spread: fly-whisks, bells, talismans, and formation plates."
"They gathered in twos and threes, murmuring among themselves.
A sharp, practiced light sat in their eyes."
