“So, you’ve really been living in Solenia all this time?”
Robert’s eyebrows pulled tight as he stared at Nora, his voice catching a little.
“Yeah.” Nora nodded, rushing to defend Franco. “Dad, Lottie’s father has always treated me well. I mean it.”
“‘Treated you well’?” The words barely left her mouth before Robert shot up from the sofa. His cane hit the floor with a loud thud. “That’s what you call it? Letting you get pregnant at nineteen and have a kid—is that your idea of ‘good’?”
Nora opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
She’d tried so hard to skip over that part, talking around it for ages, but of course her dad picked up on it right away.
“He’s still alive, isn’t he? What’s his name? How old is he? What does he do?” Robert’s voice was sharp and angry. “If he’s alive, I’ll have him dragged here right now.”
Twenty years. He’d missed out on twenty years with Nora. Someone had to answer for that.
“He’s here, Dad. He’s just outside.” Nora flinched at her father’s reaction, biting her lip and sending up a silent prayer for Franco. “Could you please go easy on him?”
Robert just stared at her, silent, his face cycling through a storm of emotions.
Both Nora and Charlotte were back, but it didn’t feel like things were really back to normal. What kind of karma was this, having both his girls swept off their feet by men at the very same age?
“Good. Let him in.” Robert cleared his throat, sounding gruff. “I want to see exactly what sort of man you’d risk everything for. Let’s see if he’s really worth it.”
Half a minute later, the butler led Franco, Charlotte, and Anthony into the hall.
Robert looked up and immediately noticed the tall, sharp figure stepping in, light streaming behind him. Franco kept his head bowed, trying his best to look respectful, but there was something about him that gave away just how strong his presence was. And that face… well.
Robert shot a look at Nora, who was clearly anxious, and let out a little snort. “You and Lottie really are mother and daughter.”
Nora blinked, confused.
Robert shook his head. “You both go weak for a handsome face.”
