"I'm fine."
Newell brushed Cedric's hand aside. Just as he stepped out, he nearly collided with a woman dressed to perfection, every move she made radiating grace and poise.
"Newell, where are you off to?"
"That's none of your concern," he replied, barely glancing at her, his face as frosty as always.
"Franco's back," Damaris said, fussing with her ornate shawl as she trailed behind him, her heels tapping against the floor, her voice tinged with excitement. "And I heard he brought his daughter along."
Newell didn't even blink. His attitude toward Damaris was pure ice.
"The Hawk family sent word. Franco's daughter is Asclepius, the famous genius from the medical world."
"So what?" Newell turned his head, a smirk playing at his lips.
Damaris faltered, her face going a bit pale. She took a breath and kept going. "If she's Asclepius, she'll figure out the cure for the gene mutation sooner or later. You don't have to worry."
Newell stayed quiet.
"Which means, if anyone should be marrying you, it's her."
Newell stopped, hands shoved in his pockets. He looked up at her, cool and unbothered. "So you want to swap fiancées now?"
"Who wouldn't want their daughter to marry into our family?" Damaris replied. Merging the two big families was supposed to make them rulers of the Isle of Veil. Power, prestige, everything.
Newell's deep blue eyes flashed with mocking amusement. He let out a short, dry laugh. "Go ahead. If you can talk her into marrying me, I'll do it."
"Are you serious?" Damaris stared at him, surprised. Before Charlotte showed up, Marcia was the Hawk family heir. He'd never been this agreeable before.
"I'm serious," Newell replied, his tone cool, his smile almost teasing. "But honestly, getting the Hawk family to hand over the antidote is way more likely than getting her to agree to marry me."
