Charlotte sat quietly, listening to every word.
“While you were away on the Isle of Veil, I spent my days in the lab,” Nora said. “I watched the antidote’s progress. Once they isolate the right compound, the antidote will be ready soon. It’s fine if I don’t take it for now, but you… it’s different for you.”
Nora reached out and gently took Charlotte’s hand, her voice soft and full of warmth. “If you take it, you’ll stay healthy, and that means you can keep working on the research. We’ll get to the new antidote even faster. Isn’t that right, Lottie?”
Charlotte raised her eyebrows, just a little. She couldn’t help but wonder if maybe she’d gone overboard with the medicine she’d slipped into Nora’s soup. Was her mom thinking straight?
What made her think a speech like that would work on her?
“Actually, that sort of makes sense,” Charlotte said, nodding as if she was convinced. She smiled, playing along. “But I already took a suppressant earlier. There’s a chance it’ll clash with the antidote, so I can’t take it right now.”
“A suppressant?” Nora paused, thinking it over. She lowered her voice. “If you stop taking it for three days, it’ll be fine.” She’d read about it back in the lab.
“Okay.” Charlotte nodded.
“Then we’ll wait three days,” Nora said, and she let out a long breath, obviously relieved. She brushed her fingers over Charlotte’s cheek, then quickly tucked the medicine away and handed it to Franco. “Here, I’ll keep this safe, alright?”
Charlotte hesitated on purpose, letting her disappointment show. “Fine. But in these three days, think really carefully about who needs it most.”
There was no question about it. The medicine was for Charlotte. Nora just didn’t want to say it out loud.
…
Later, back in their room, Nora clutched the small box and looked around, searching for a good hiding spot.
