When she saw Charlotte come home, Franco finally relaxed. He hurried to bring out the soup he’d just made. It was dark, thick, and the medicine seemed to get stronger—and nastier—every time.

Nora, being a doctor, understood her own condition all too well. She was seriously ill, and she knew these medicines didn’t really help much. She’d planned to avoid taking them whenever Lottie wasn’t around. But Franco always seemed to know exactly when to show up, conveniently bringing the soup out right in front of Charlotte.

“I’m going to the bathroom for a minute,” Nora said, biting her lip as she got up, trying to slip away. Charlotte’s voice came, slow and calm.

“Sit down.”

Nora frowned a little but did as she was told, sinking back into her seat.

“I’ll feed you.”

Charlotte took the bowl, cooled it with a few gentle blows, and started feeding Nora, one spoonful at a time. Nora already knew how stubborn Charlotte could be. There was no point in resisting, so she didn’t.

Once the medicine was gone, Charlotte checked Nora’s pulse, a small smile curling at the corner of her lips. Tomorrow night, Nora could finally take the antidote.

“Lottie.” Nora held Charlotte’s hand, her voice soft and gentle. “I heard you’re going out tomorrow night. No drinking, okay?” She’d be taking the antidote as soon as she got back. Nothing could go wrong.

“I know.” Charlotte nodded, her smile warm and obedient. “Take your medicine and get some sleep.”

“Alright.” Nora stroked Charlotte’s cheek, then turned to Anthony with the same tender look. “Anthony, keep an eye on her for me tomorrow.”
